Pavement Mushroom or Spring Agaricus

Agaricus bitorquis

Pavement Mushroom Agaricus bitorquis.

DIMENSIONS Cap 4–10cm; stem 3–6 x 1.5–2cm.

Roadsides and verges are commonplace locations for this urban mushroom – it is quite a remarkable species, with its power to push through very dense soil and even tarmac. The species is pure white, and is sometimes covered in very pale, ochre-coloured scales. It has a short, thick stem and rounded cap that expands flatter, and is often covered in soil or asphalt remnants. The double ring on the stem (one curving upwards and the other downwards) is a distinctive feature to look out for. The gills are dark pink when young, then clay-brown and finally dark brown.
